  • You know, I agree. But also, you can’t imagine how much I want to scratch the cars that just park illegally in my neighborhood. They park on the curves and crossings and in such small distances that I literally cannot pass through with my stroller without scratching them. So I end up going around the block(s) further and further away just to pass through some gap of illegally parked cars that’s just big enough if I am very careful. But then I end up thinking, wtf. Why do I have to be careful to not scratch their wrongfully parked cars, a private property that they left outside on a place designed and protected by law to be solely for pedestrians, with my private property that should be able to walk this road? And also, why do I not get the same protection if I want to park my bike or stroller outside? Because no one cares if my private property is damaged when it is left outside. If I scratch my stroller on an illegally parked car when I cross the road at the place I am supposed to be crossing somehow I am the one who has to pay damages.

  • That’s how I handled my high school year abroad. Because I literally came from Germany, I replied to that question with “I am from Germany”. Not “I am German”, but “from Germany”. I was born and raised there and only lived there. Only if it came up (e.g. because of my passport) or made sense in context, I mentioned that I am a Russian from Germany. So basically most people only found out about my genetics five months in. But of course that works much easier when you pass due to looks and accent.

  • Absolutely feel you. We have a 2.5 year old, she’s not in kindergarten yet, and what I get are micro breaks and I want to be like my husband who can just read Zelensky’s biography or a buddhist book for 5-15 minutes (his breaks are not as micro as mine) and have the concentration - or accept the lack thereof - to read. Sometimes he plays guitar with us in the room. Or does mini yoga sessions (like, 1 exercise for 2-3 minutes).

I, too, struggle without reddit in the microbreaks. Especially when breastfeeding because our girl kicks away books or magazines I basically only have my phone. What I can tell you is that lemmy got more instances so check out more communities and keep adding. It can help but yes it’s no reddit. Tbh I’ve been wanting to go back to reddit for ages, I just never get around to installing it again. I also check out a news app and read wikipedia articles. Did you know that giant deer were a thing and that Einstein was kind of an asshole in relationships? Light reading and you get into a draft where you end up with 100 tabs open to read that wait for you. This probably sounds whelp but it is really kinda addictive and fun, you can gain some knowledge and understanding or at least conversation topics.

Since you are probably not breastfeeding (I GUESS) try the magazine thing. Something light might do. There’s been a great family/parenting focused magazine in Germany but it has been discontinued.

I am also going to start trying to knit. My guess is that it won’t work because my toddler will take the needles and yarn the second she sees them but Idk how your kids are.

I’ve also been going to some playgroups and it’s always recommended to not cater to the kids and “just let them watch” or “integrate” or “play in parallel” to you doing stuff like household. I personally ask myself what kind of kids people have that this approach would work most of the time. But if this works for your family try filling the breaks with household stuff that maybe the kids can, as mentioned above, watch, join, or parallel play to. Clean a window, fix a hole in a shirt. Leaves you with less chores and tasks and if you’re lucky you can shut off your brain for a while. That’s the proclaimed ideal.

At the end of the day, lemmy isn’t reddit, and reddit kept us well entertained in these micro breaks. I absolutely feel you and I also don’t want to be a parent who pretends phones and media don’t exist or that I don’t use them. But I think we should have some stuff to do to fill the microbreaks with besides our phones. Like, man, I cannot give you any advice but we can brainstorm together if you want. Because I also want more enjoyable breaks, as well as spend less time looking at a screen in these - for my own health and for my child, she should see that I can fill my time not only with these screen induced dopamine kicks.

  • I’d freaking love to work as a waitress. It was my dream job as a kid and when I tried it here and there I enjoyed it a lot. But the pay is shit and the social status, being looked down on, as someone stupid or lower… Man, I’d love to be a part time waitress. But until socialism hits and a part time waiting job would be sufficient to feed half a family I’ll stick with the biomedical industry and PhD program.

It always makes me so sad to think about how children talk about those “shit jobs”. You won’t find a kid who wants to become a financial advisor or a tax attorney. Most kids want to build homes, cook, wait, clean, work with animals, drive trains, drive trucks, … Jesus how many kids I see who are freaking fascinated by garbage trucks and want nothing more than to work as garbage men. And then they grow up and society indoctrinates them into thinking these are bad jobs for lower people, and reality shows you that you can’t make a living off these jobs, so better do something you cannot even pronounce.

  • Didn’t someone above mention one? I don’t, unfortunately, and I live in Germany, so probably anything I’d find wouldn’t be available where you live. But I am very intrigued now I have to admit. (Also because my sister has a cat who pisses everywhere and I love cats but their house smells awful. Enzymatic sprays sound amazing.)

Edit: The csi spray even contains bacteria (together with enzymes), man, what a time to be alive. There’s a spray for basically every animal.

  • Came back to read the other comments, take the enzyme spray!!! I highly vote for the enzyme spray. If there’s an enzyme for your problem then always take the enzyme.

Ozone sounds also really cool but keep in mind that ozone itself smells weird and maybe don’t exactly breathe it in. (The smell will go away fast but I have worked with quite a few people who felt quite lightheaded after breathing in the ozone from a freshly UV-ed workbench.)

Whatever you choose, read the label instructions first to make sure it doesn’t corrode stuff, break down plastic etc.

  • Lol oh Jesus please don’t use the heat gun (although I would love to use it myself), apart from the danger, I’ll also point out that while you might not melt the plastic, you might still destabilize it and/or release some actually toxic (and also smelly) compounds. I imagine a low heat blow with a normal hair dryer just to air it out would be a smart step though.

As for what works best in terms of encapsulation - I would try to ask in a community of rodent lovers. I can imagine that those guys have their secret weapons.
